Multi-server question

If I'm buying another server just to host the videos, do I need to install a media streaming software? Also, is it recommended I buy a dedicated server for a small new adult website or is VPS just fine in the start with reasonable specs?

Re: Multi-server question

For starting a new website a VPS or small dedicated server (for 49$ / month, or even cheaper if you can find) is perfect. For multi server, a server with good bandwidth is required (100mbps/1gbps) and nginx for pseudostreaming.

Re: Multi-server question

So wait, are you saying that I can buy any VPS or small dedi and install nginx for pseudostreaming and everything will work fine? In other words, I don't need to buy those media softwares like Helix, Wowza, etc?

Re: Multi-server question

For a website that just started yet. For a website with 5-10k visitors you need a more powefull server, but still nginx will work. No Helxi/Wowza needed.

Re: Multi-server question

I see. If I have two servers, one for videos and one for the website. When a user visits the website to watch a video, on which server is the bandwidth affected?

Re: Multi-server question

The bandwidth from the server where the video is located will be used (if you are using multi-server and the video was transfered to the video server, then from the video server).

Re: Multi-server question

Thanks! Apart from installing nginx and apache for pseudostreaming, do I need anything else? Such as a database, another copy of ASP, etc.

Re: Multi-server question

you only need a server that has webserver such as nginx and ftp server installed in it... create ftp account in your video server and configure your subdomain for it .. then plug it in to your main website

and if you want pseudostreaming for flash videos you need to configure that in nginx...

FYI ... MP4 HTML5 Videos on HTML5 video player has pseudostreaming work out of the box, no need for extra configuration... only Flash Videos requires extra configuration for pseudostreaming

Re: Multi-server question

Another question came up on my mind today. When I'm buying another server, do I have to buy it under my websites domain or can I use any domain for the server?

Re: Multi-server question

The server can have any domain (the server itself is not linked to a domain, its called a hostname and it does not have to be a real domain, eg: you could have server1.google.com and it would stilll work), however you need a subdomain of your website hosted on that server for easy cookie management (eg: yourwebsite.com is the site, and media1.yourwebsite.com can be a site hosted on the new server for the videos).

I understood the first part but you threw me off on the second part.

Lets say sexdomain.com is my main website.
etcetcetc.com is a server for the videos.

I must create a sub-domain on my main site so it becomes etcetcetc.sexdomain.com?

Re: Multi-server question

Yes, you need etcetcetc.sexdomain.com subdomain and the website accessible through this domain should be hosted on the second server.

Re: Multi-server question

Thanks Symtab for explanation but I am still lost on one part. I'm using cPanel so in the sub-domains config area, I only see doc root and if I am correct then the doc root can only be of the directories on the server. How do I make it accessible on the second server?

Re: Multi-server question

You add the subdomain on the second server, not on the main/first server. In cpanel you can add a domain or a subdomain directly for Create Account on the second server.

Re: Multi-server question

So just to be clear, the sub-domain I add is basically under the name of my main server?

Re: Multi-server question

You add a subdomain of your domain on the second server. Eg: on the main server you have the domain mywebsite.com and then on the second server you host subdomain.mywebsite.com. You add subdomain.mywebsite.com on the second server directly in cpanel on the second server. You only need to add the subdomain on the first server in cpanel if you manage yours DNS on the first server.

Re: Multi-server question

Thanks! That cleared up the confusion I had. Also, can the name of the subdomain also be random or does it have to have the name of the main/first server?

Re: Multi-server question

In order for the files to load faster it is better that the subdomain is anythinghere.yourmaindomain.com. This way cookies will already be propagated through the domain/subdomain. If you use another anythinghere.anotherdomain.com, then it will be slower. Now this wont be noticeable for a small amount of visitors, but when you have many visitors it will be important (yahoo/google guidelines...).
