Changing domain name of my site

I am contemplating changing my domain name.

I currently run fetishvideos.ca but I have never been crazy about he .ca

I am contemplating purchasing a very good .com domain and changing name but still keeping the site intact (just switching domain name)

I have never done anything like this before and not sure how to do this.

Can anyone advise me on how to proceed? FetishVideos.ca currently has about 200gb of uploaded (legal) content, and is on a dedicated server.

Any help is appreciated

I dont know if its possible without losing traffic. You might need to check with google webmasters if you can redirect all urls to the new domain. Also did you edit the video titles?

I'm not particularly worried about traffic at this point as I haven't actively promoted it and there is very little traffic. The only traffic I do really get is from google but it is very little, and no I haven't edited ant titles.

What is the process of moving it though?

If this is same server, only domain is different, it's not a big problem.
I wouldn't even move files, just only replace domain's directory name.
Of course inside script you will need also to change values that points to certain domain name.

Such domain directory name you can change as root, but later must change directory (and all files/folders inside) owner.

Why do you want to change the domain name? (sincerly, i dont think you should do it, unless you can get fetishvideos.com, fetishvids.com, fetishvideos.xxx....or something similar, the traffic from google is very important, how many visitors does google send you? does this traffic convert? (i own a few girlfriend sites and the conversion is from 1:400 to 1:600-700 depending on the month, which is very good, all traffic from google)).

I checked my google analytics acccount, not very much traffic to speak of ...

18 visitors via google

September
78 visitors from google

This new name is a very brandable name, and I believe I can very easily build on it. If you believe I would take a significant hit from Google by moving it I am even considering rebuilding the site on the new domain from scratch.

only redirect 301 and on webmaster tool select change domain name to new its the best form because dont lose traffix keep page rank and all.

301 redirects would be helpful. you can make changes using rewrite module of Apache if you are using Apache web server in .htaccess file.

how about writing in hosts file 127.0.0.1 <your site name> that will create virtual host
