I have used nginx to serve both as web server and streaming server for some time.
I would like to give RTMP a try.
Is there still some free options besides Red5. It seems that crtmp is no longer updated.

nginx has a rtmp module, but i did not test it yet, but with all rtmp servers the problem is mobile, mobile phones dont support rtmp

all web servers work, apache, nginx or lighttpd. i personally use and recommend nginx.
