what folder do I place the canonical tag?

Hello,

I know the tag looks like this: <link rel=”canonical” href=”http://www.bablablablabla.com/whatever” />

and goes in the head of the page.

What are the name of the folders where I can find the <head> and place the tag?

Thank you in advance.

Re: what folder do I place the canonical tag?

I have many duplicate pages :: Duplicate title tags,  Duplicate Short meta descriptions and Duplicate meta descriptions.  I know  we can use the

<link rel="canonical" href="http://www.domain.com/category/"/>  to eliminate duplicate content, but where in the head to I paste this info?

I do not want all categories going to my home page through canonical?

Any help on this is appreciated?

Thanks in advance

Re: what folder do I place the canonical tag?

Edit /modules/video/components/category.php and add:

$tpl->canonical = BASE_URL.'/'.$slug.'/'.$order.'/'.$timeline.'/'.$page.'/';

Re: what folder do I place the canonical tag?

OK I added the code starting on line 10 - looks like this ::

        public function render()
    {
        $tpl->canonical = BASE_URL.'/'.$slug.'/'.$order.'/'.$timeline.'/'.$page.'/';

        $args        = $this->get_query(true);
        $slug        = $args['slug'];
        $order        = $args['order'];
        .....
                .....

I will keep the forum updated with results.

Cheers!

Re: what folder do I place the canonical tag?

You do not need to edit the header.tpl.php file. If a canonical variable is defined for the template it will automatically create the canonical header tag.

Re: what folder do I place the canonical tag?

It's only been 1 day but still have over 200+ pages that are showing as duplicate content.  I will check periodically for changes in webmaster tools and keep forum updated.

Re: what folder do I place the canonical tag?

I do not know how google counts/checks the duplicate content. If the canonical tag is good, exact same pages (with different urls) should only have one valid canonical url. Can you list a few of the duplicate pages? Please not that if you check most of the porn sites out there have duplicate titles, descriptions for a lot of pages...

Re: what folder do I place the canonical tag?

Hmm....there should be different titles for the main pages, however for the sub-pages, there is no separate title. I could add the page if you want.

Re: what folder do I place the canonical tag?

This is fixed in recent versions, every page has its own title/desc and also adds the page to the title.

Re: what folder do I place the canonical tag?

The canonical tag problem is fixed in version 2.x. If this does not work on your setup, then there might be something wrong with the install or with the language file. I have just tested my own site to make sure, and it has 3 duplicate titles (for /, signup/ and /feedback/, which i will fix in 2.2.2).
