Any way to limit connections per user

Today one IP had 256 active connections to my site which of course lead server to be not accessable. What is tha maximum connections a user should have? How can I limit this?

You can limit this from the web server. Depending on which web server you use, there are configurations to limit the bandwidth for each ip.
